The Nature of Abstraction

Posted on

There were only a few really great teachers of painting in the 20th century among them Robert Henri and Hans Hofmann. Many would put them in different genres of substantive imagery, but that is not the case. What both men taught was living a life of art, and that painting is pure design. Both were of their time and explained thinking as well as seeing which is something that seems to have fallen out of favor in current trends. The lessons of Hofmann apply to all genres of art and are not the purview of abstraction. The push and pull of color the dynamic opposition and arrangement elements enter into the success or failure of all works of art. Click the length below to review his exhibition.
