One-Day Masterclass – The Art of the Start, June 26, 2021

Gesture and Expression of the Visual Language

Michael Mentler will conduct a one-day drawing MasterClass at The Society of Figurative Arts Studio on the elements of the visual language. The class will cover the Language of Drawing_the Evolution of Intent from Imitation to Imagination_and the Art of the Start using Mass Conception and Gestural Expression.

Basically, we will go over everything one needs to start drawing in the Renaissance tradition. This MasterClass Lab is the foundation of Michael’s Life-Drawing, Figure Structure, and “Heads, Faces and Features” workshops. This class is for beginners to professionals who want to strengthen their fundamental knowledge-base and skill-sets.

Michael will Demo in the Morning and we will draw from the live model in the afternoon. Michael will also demo from the model and critiques will be given during breaks upon request. Those that attend this workshop will receive discounts on Michaels DVD, Book and future workshops.

Drawing MasterClass Structure

There will be a lecture with demonstrations in the first half of the drawing MasterClass, and then a practical assignment in the second half. Demonstrations will be from 9am to 12pm. Then, we’ll take a 30-minute lunch break, please bring a snack with you. We have a fridge in case you need to store your lunch, and sodas, coffee, and water available. After lunch, attendees will draw from the live model from 12:30pm to 3:30pm with critiques as requested. Lastly, there will be a 30-minute recap of the material at the end of the day.


All of the drawing materials will be provided for in-studio use. This includes easels or benches, drawing boards, charcoal, shammy, and paper. Please bring a notebook and a writing instrument to take notes during the demonstrations.
